Introduction to the Youth Section of the Penang Kar Yin Association

The Youth Section of the Penang Kar Yin Fee Kon was established in the late 1970s with the objectives of uniting young people of Kar Yin (Jiaying) origin, preserving Hakka culture and nurturing future leaders for the Association.  Its formation marked a further enhancement of the Association’s organizational structure, enabling the cultural and social services of the Jiaying community to be carried forward across generations.

Development and Organizational Structure

Since its inception, the Youth Section has actively participated in various Association activities, serving as a dynamic force in its affairs.  Structurally, the Youth Section comprises positions such as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, and functional subcommittees for culture, welfare and sports, forming a comprehensive management system.  During its vibrant period in the 1980s, leaders such as Yang You Shi and Lee Song Chang held key positions, mentoring a cohort of young members who later assumed important roles within the Association, thus laying the foundation for sustainable leadership. Key Activities and Contributions

Support for Association Affairs

Actively assists in core events of the Association, including traditional festivals, senior citizens’ gatherings, scholarship presentations, Hakka language classes and cultural performances.

Independent Initiatives

Organizes youth camps, themed talks, sports competitions and various charitable activities, strengthening unity and service awareness among youth members while enriching the Association’s programs.

Innovative Development

Adapts activity models to attract new generations in response to changing times.  Beyond traditional support roles, the Youth Section has recently focused on digital outreach, inter-association networking and cultural innovation, fostering continued identification with ancestral heritage among Jiaying youth in a diverse society.

Talent Development and Succession

Serving as an important platform for cultivating future community leaders, the Youth Section has produced numerous capable young cadres over the years, ensuring the continuity and sustainable growth of the Association’s mission.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, the Youth Section will uphold its guiding principles of “Unity, Service, and Heritage”, dedicated to nurturing a new generation of Jiaying youth with social responsibility and cultural commitment. As the Association advances towards modernization, the Youth Section will ensure that its legacy endures, contributing to the promotion of Hakka culture and the fostering of social harmony.
